Welcome to Student Photography
Semester 1 - 2021

Picture

MRMS Art students began researching the basic art elements & principles as introduction to all future art projects.
We began the photography unit 2021 with basics of editing and using the cropping and other editing options available on most digital cameras (student phones or they used mine).
We then began using art elements of line and shape and principles of balance and pattern to guide our process.

Students have begun to take notes on each unit at the beginning of class.  We review expectations and view examples of relevant work from professional photographers as well as student work from previous years in photography/Art class with Ms. Losness. The first week of September 2021 we attempted to use art elements of Line and Shape and art principles of Pattern and Balance (symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial balance).

These are examples of some of the student work from the introduction week of photography using Line, Shape, Pattern and Balance:

During the month of September, students have continued the routine of photography research and brainstorming ideas before going outside and around the school grounds to experiment with the new techniques and methods discussed in class.
After the initial introduction to the Elements and Principles of Art, we continued study of photography by exploring Balance in our compositions.  Students learned about 3 types of Balance and took photos using symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial balance.
After learning about Balance, students then discovered ways to use Reflections in photography.  The students used 3 different reflective surfaces to create a variety of photographs; mirrors, liquids and alternative reflective surfaces that were not a traditional mirror (like hubcaps, toasters and door knobs).

Point of View became the next technique to compose photographs from the low p.o.v. "worm's eye view" and the higher "bird's eye view" from above the subject.  Students also learned how to create photos that depicted a "First Person" point of view.
After reviewing photography that incorporated the use of shadow and/or silhouette, students then brainstormed more ideas in their sketchbooks.  They created their own photos after they clearly understood the difference between a shadow and a silhouette. Then we learned how to spell
s-i-l-h-o-u-e-t-t-e.

Using movement in the next round of photography explorations, students attempted to create photos showing suspended movement as well as blurred motion photos (part of the photo is intentionally blurred to show movement)
Point of View became the next technique to compose photographs from the low p.o.v. "worm's eye view" and the higher "bird's eye view" from above the subject.  Students also learned how to create photos that depicted a "First Person" point of view.
Students created black and white Landscape photos after reviewing the famous photography by Ansel Adams.  They learned about the horizon line and how to crop a photo using the "Rule of Thirds" in the composition of the landscape.  Texture, Value and Contrast were discussed as elements of art that work well with a black and white format.
Students will finish the last week of Photography study in Art class by learning about the use of Depth of Field and how to use a background, mid and foreground for effect.  We will also review and compose photos that make a creative use of both positive and negative Space; the final Art Element used in the photography explorations.
